The fourth industrial revolution is known for the disruption brought about by emerging technologies such as Artificial intelligence. In anaesthesia and patient safety, augmented intelligence blends the power of artificial intelligence with the sophistication of human perception, empathy and experience in the perioperative care of patients. It promises a reduction in cognitive workload and error that will improve the overall outcome of patients, together with the peril of algorithmic bias, and legal and ethical conundrums. This presentation will give an overview of augmented intelligence, concluding with the alternative roles for human clinicians in which different forms of augmentation will take place.
