Abstract:

Over the last 25 years there has been a significant growth of office-based surgery – a new setting for surgery, minimally invasive diagnostic and interventional procedures. Although the OBA setting offers distinct advantages to both patients and providers, the infrastructural and personnel capacity differences from ASCs and hospitals demand that all stakeholders understand the multifaceted challenges involved in ensuring the highest quality patient care and safety. With a continued increase in the number and complexity of both patients and procedures, the lack of uniform regulations and standard of care, health care providers must develop and implement safe and efficient systems to optimize patient outcomes and minimize morbidity in the office-based surgical and anesthesia setting.
